The Miracle Worker (1962)
Bancroft was an entertainer who was regarded with an Oscar grant just once which was for acting in the film known as ‘The Marvel Specialist’. Whereby she performed the character of an extreme and fiery lady teacher known as Annie Sullivan. This illustrates the determination that Sullivan has to go through to make the young and the speech-impaired Helen speak again. Another obvious feature that was used by Bancroft was stream, physical and emotional actions she portrayed pain in her acting. Specifically, the interaction between the two leading actors, the heroine, and the sidekick, the lady, Helen, acted by Patty Duke was stated to have passion, and feeling.
The Pumpkin Eater (1964)
Her second Oscar nomination was in ‘The Pumpkin Eater’. Where she portrayed the role of Jo Armitage in this movie, the main focus is on a woman who struggles between who she is and what she wants in an unhappy marriage. She was loved for her acting, with the performance being energetic at the same time, there was a mysterious atmosphere around her. Even though she portrayed a helpless woman who is in search of help. However, it would be remiss not to point out that Bancroft also developed the film’s themes of betrayal, motherhood, and identity crises.
The Graduate (1967)
Bancroft made her significant acting presentation depicting the staggering yet disturbed character of Mrs. Robinson appears in “The Graduate”. In one of the movies, she was involved in the scene where she is an older woman who is having an affair with a young college graduate Dustin Hoffman. The scene was tempting but pitiful. This was rather brilliant from Bancroft when developing the character as the viewers switch between sympathy and hatred towards the character about the show. But, she was three years older than Hoffman and still, she was able to depict the frailty of Mrs. Robinson.
The Turning Point (1977)
In “Turning Point,” Bancroft assumes the part of Emma Jacklin, an expert ballet artist and companion who revives a fellowship with a previous opponent depicted by Shirley MacLaine. It captures the drive, the pain, the hours spent at the barre and the commitment which one requires to become a ballet dancer. The performance by Cate Blanchett was characterized as graceful and passionate for a woman who has to plan her work and life before retiring. At least, it was pleasant to see Peter Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine on the big screen together as they did have good on-screen chemistry.
Agnes of God (1985)
Her fifth film is the psychological drama “Agnes of God” in which she is a nun, Mother Miriam Ruth. For which the film was nominated for an Oscar for her performance, the storyline of the film is based on the postpartum murder of a baby by a young nun. One of them was the Mother Superior played by Bancroft. She was the nun’s advocate and Bancroft did well because she was strict yet compassionate. Some of the themes exhibited in the movie included faith, guilt, and redemption, and Bancroft illustrated these well.
