It is, however, pertinent to note that this man, Rex Harrison was actually among the most popular English actors that the twentieth Century produced. He was an actor in both movies and theatre. And one could say that he was among those actors who always had their ‘stunts’ and were types cast for at most two roles.  This is why when he went to the Oscars, based on nominations and achievements, one can conclude that he is a stakeholder in entertainment.

Here is a brief history of Rex Harrison’s path to the Academy Awards

Here are some of the main events up to the time that Rex Harrison was able to bag an Oscar award:

Anna and the King of Siam

The movie is based on the novel by Margaret Landon, “Anna and the King of Siam”, which tells the story of Anna Leonowens. A British schoolmistress who agrees to become a governess for the King Mongkut of Siam in the 1860s.

My Fair Lady

This musical comedy is a screen adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s play ‘Pygmalion. ’ The movie features Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle – a Cockney flower girl who is taken in by the charming Professor Henry Higgins to make a lady out of the girl.  This Higgins, arrogant and endearing, was portrayed by Harrison to the utmost and the film was both critically successful and commercially successful.  This performance was enough to make him clinch the much-desired.

The spirit of laughter is not dead

The Oscar, which Rex Harrison won for ‘My Fair Lady’ put him into the category of leading men of Hollywood. And his dry wit and suave personality were endearing to the public across the globe.

Significant career milestones

Rex Harrison is an actor who has been actively involved in acting from his childhood though he joined the stage at Liverpool Repertory Theatre in 1924. This helped in improving his stage charm and acting prowess at a very fast rate.

He started acting in films in the 1930s but took his time and gained a steady footing in comedies and dramatics.

Broadway made him a major actor and he was a part of the original cast of ‘My Fair Lady’ where he portrayed the character of Henry Higgins. It was moved to the film and netted him critical acclamation as well as his first and only Academy Award.

His creations on stage and in the motion picture and especially the manner he portrayed roles in his acts can be seen as having made a great contribution to the field.

The Oscar was romantically linked with Rex Harrison, the highly cultured distinguished Englishman who was intelligent and humorous.

Beyond the Oscars

Anyways, Hudson and Mulligan were not the only Oscar-nomination performances in Harrison’s career which has been active for over forty years now in the film industry. He was active in theater first then in films. Other acts of this author include, “Anna and the King of Siam “, a book promulgated in 1956, “The Ghost and Mrs.  Muir” a book released in 1947 and “Doctor Dolittle” a book published in 1967.

Accolades and recognition

Apart from the Oscar Awards, Harrison had the Golden Globe Award, Tony Award, and BAFTA Award and had been nominated for many awards.

The following year in 1989, he was bestowed the knighthood title by Queen Elizabeth II.

The table also indicates that Rex Harrison was on his way to Oscars and therefore, he has one Oscar life in his whole life. He could still come with his humour, his rhetorics and his screen presence that defined cinemas for a long time.

Additional notes

It may be rather surprising that Harrison was not originally planned to perform as the main character in the movie ‘My Fair Lady. Other actors were considered for this part before Harrison got into the movie, but he did well in portraying the role of Higgins.

Rex Harrison received two Golden Globe nominations for these films: He won the Best Actor Drama award for ‘Cleopatra’ in 1964. But in 1965 he received the Best Actor Musical or Comedy for ‘My Fair Lady’ thus, elbowing out the previous year’s winner.

Hence, Rex Harrison was nominated for three Oscars, and it is one of the most popular shots in the film, and this is the top of the actor’s film activity. His nominations prove that he is a versatile actor and they demonstrate the possibility of acting in both drama and comedy scripts. This is perhaps one of the great achievements that will remain associated with him in the world of movies and he was able to clinch an Oscar for ‘My Fair Lady’.
