Larry Ellison is an accomplished entrepreneur and a successful businessman in the United States. He is widely recognized as the co-founder and chief executive officer of the software company, Oracle Corporation. It is reported that under his leadership, he managed to elevate Oracle from a low-value company with only three computer experts into one of the biggest suppliers of software databases. He also transformed it into the second-largest creator of business applications around the globe.
Early life and education
Larry was born on the 17th of August 1944 in New York City. His mother, Florence Spellman, was 19 years old when she had him. Since she was a teenage mother, Larry had to be adopted by his mother’s uncle and aunt who lived in the South Sides of Chicago. He joined the University of Illinois and after two years he dropped out of the school after her adoptive mother, Lillian, died. He later attended the University of Chicago but again decided to drop out. Larry relocated to California where he spent most of his time writing computer codes for several tech entities, one of them being Ampex and Amdahl.
Launching of oracle
The idea of launching Oracle came to Larry suddenly while he was going through research papers about databases. The readings that he came across provided him with different ways of organizing huge volumes of information and how to access them with ease. According to Larry, it was one of the biggest commercial opportunities that he knew would change how businesses operate. In 1977, Larry and his former workmates Ed Oates and Bob Miner from Ampex company risked some of their money and founded Software Development Laboratories. It is this company that later turned into Oracle and after two years they successfully built their first SQL (structured query language) for managing huge databases.
It should be noted that winning a 50,000 dollar contract from the United States Central Intelligence Agency was the chief contributor to their early success.
However, after the success of Oracle was announced to the public in 1986, the company started experiencing major challenges. In 1990 the company took a significant loss and there were several accusations that the company was involved in deceptive sales of its shares. Larry and his team later made major positive changes in the company and created Oracle 7 which was widely accepted in the markets. During that time, automotive makers, retailers, governments, banks, airlines, and corporations heavily relied on Oracle 7. In 2000, Larry was named the world’s highest-paid individual with total payments of 1.8 billion dollars.
Cloud-based business tech companies
By the end of 2019, Larry had strategically placed the network of Oracle’s architecture to manage the massive rising of cloud-based business tech companies. In 2020, four months after Covid-19 erupted, people were forced to work from home, and a lot of communications had to be made online. Larry, therefore, won the contract of offering its services to Zoom Video Communications as many people were starting to use the platform for communication.
Outshining rivals
Larry is acknowledged as a skillful maneuver in the tech world. He has set a remarkable record of outshining his competitors by being able to identify new markets that were underrated or overlooked. This explains why he has been able to drive huge growth in his company ever since he found it. Most businessmen that have been inspired by Larry have credited him as a smart and aggressive innovator.
Conclusion
Even though some individuals refer to Larry Ellison as a school-drop out, he definitely beat the odds and became one of the most successful people alive. He is not only a legend in the tech industry, but also a good example of a visionary leader. He will go down in the history books of records as being the first individual to predict the revolutionary implication the internet would have in the world of business.
