Marsha Mason, an American actress, and filmmaker, was born on April 3, 1942. Because of her roles in Cinderella Liberty, The Goodbye Girl, Chapter Two, and Only When I Laugh, she has received four nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She also received Golden Globe Awards for the first two films. She was married to playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon from 1973 to 1983. Three of her four Oscar-nominated roles were written by Simon.

Mason made his screen debut in the 1966 movie Hot Rod Hullabaloo. Blume in Love, The Cheap Detective, Max Dugan Returns, Heartbreak Ridge, Stella, and Drop Dead Fred are some of the other films she has been in. She appeared on television in the soap opera Love of Life (1971–1972), and her recurring role in the sitcom Frasier (1997–1998) earned her an Emmy nomination.

She also had a long career on stage, making her Broadway debut in the 1968 comedy Cactus Flower as a replacement. She appeared in a London production of The Prisoner of Second Avenue in 1999, and the 2000 recording earned her a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. She played the lead role in Hecuba’s American premiere production at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in 2006. Mason’s past Broadway performances on the stage include Steel Magnolias (2005), Impressionism (2009), and The Night of the Iguana (1996).

Nominations

After seeing Mason in the 1973 film Blume in Love, Neil Simon hired her for his Broadway production of The Good Doctor. Mason and Simon, a widower, fell in love and wed shortly after that. Mason received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress the same year for her performance in the 20th Century Fox movie Cinderella Liberty with James Caan. Mason received a second Best Actress nomination for Simon’s hugely popular movie The Goodbye Girl in 1977 thanks to her performance in the movie. The 1979 film adaptation of Simon’s popular play Chapter Two, which was based on Mason’s relationship with Simon before their marriage, successfully placed Mason as Jennie MacLaine. She received a third Oscar nomination for Best Actress as the movie turned out to be another tremendous success.

Simon’s film adaptation of his Broadway comedy-drama The Gingerbread Lady, which starred Mason, Kristy McNichol, James Coco, and Joan Hackett, was another financial triumph. Mason received numerous accolades for her portrayal of Georgia Hines and received a fourth Best Actress Oscar nomination.

In the 1999 L.A. Theatre Works production of Duncan Weldon and Emanuel Azenberg’s The Prisoner of Second Avenue, Mason reconnected with co-star Richard Dreyfuss from Goodbye Girl and author Neil Simon. She was nominated for a Grammy in comedy.

A life of legacy

Celebrating this movie classic is simple since, for an entire decade and a half, her toothy vibrance and warm energy brought a lot of light and happiness to screens.

Mason’s unique talent was meeting the project’s commercial requirements while digging deep to strengthen the argument.  Sadly, Mason’s career as a leading lady was cut short after receiving four Oscar nominations. She only played significant parts in two big motion pictures: Clint Eastwood’s 1986 film Heartbreak Ridge and 1983’s Max Dugan Returns, which starred another Simon movie.  She later received an Emmy nomination for her work on Frasier and had several Broadway roles. Along with Impressionism with Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen, this also includes the revival of Night of the Iguana starring Cherry Jones.

Mason has been in supporting roles on shows like Army Wives, Lipstick Jungle, and Seinfeld. Sibs, Mason’s series, aired from 1991 to 1992. She played Sherry Dempsey in a recurring role on the television series Frasier in 1997 and 1998. She appeared alongside other actors in California Suite in February 2010 at the Skirball Cultural Centre in Los Angeles.
