One of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood history, Judy Garland is renowned for her remarkable voice, nuanced acting, and captivating on-screen persona. Garland’s Oscar experience was full of heartache as well as praise for her tremendous skill. But despite her accolades, her reputation endures forever because she is an adored and eternal star.

The road to Oscar recognition

Garland performed well in The Wizard of Oz, but the Academy did not instantly recognize her. She didn’t start to get significant notice for awards until a few years after making a name for herself at the box office. She distinguished herself from other actors of her day with her ability to convey realistic, sensitive figures with profound emotion.

With appearances in well-known musicals like Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), where she debuted the popular song “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and Easter Parade (1948), where she displayed her dynamic spectrum as a singer, Garland’s career flourished throughout the 1940s.

A Star Is Born (1954): Her first Oscar nomination

Garland received her first Oscar nomination in 1954 for her performance in A Star Is Born. George Cukor, the director, remade the 1937 classic about a young star’s ascent to stardom and her husband’s terrible descent into alcoholism. Garland reflected her encounters with the joys and sorrows of celebrity in her depiction of Esther Blodgett, a promising singer who changes into the glitzy Vicki Lester.

One of her best performances to date, according to many, came from A Star Is Born. Resonating with both spectators and critics was Garland’s unvarnished, emotionally powerful performance, especially in the movie’s musical pieces like “The Man That Got Away.” She was considered by many to be a serious candidate for that year’s Best Actress Oscar.

The shocking Oscar snub

Garland was the clear favorite to win, but Grace Kelly defeated her for the 1955 Best Actress Oscar in The Country Girl. It was a startling upset to lose. Garland was waiting for the news from her hospital bed, but she was unable to attend the event since she had just given birth to her baby. It was said that several people in the audience were shocked when she lost.

Garland’s performance in A Star Is Born continues to be one of the most acclaimed in movie history, despite the devastating defeat. Her status as one of Hollywood’s best actors was further cemented by the emotional nuance and sensitivity she gave to the part.

Comeback and recognition: Judgement at Nuremberg (1961)

Garland triumphantly returned to the big screen in Judgement at Nuremberg, a picture about the post-World War II trials of Nazi war criminals, following a period of hardship. Garland portrayed German witness Irene Hoffman in the movie, who had testified about crimes committed by the Nazis.

Garland’s performance was powerful despite having a minor part, and it earned her a second Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress. Her emotional depiction of Hoffman served as an indication of Garland’s extraordinary skill, even in her small on-screen roles.

A second heartbreaking loss

Garland gave again another fantastic performance, yet he was unsuccessful once more at the Oscars. Rita Moreno of West Side Story won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar instead of her. Even though she might not have taken home the trophy, her nomination acknowledged her continued prominence in Hollywood.

The legacy of Judy Garland’s Oscar nominations

Even though Garland never took home an Oscar, her two nominations are still a vital component of her career. She played two very different characters that demonstrated her amazing ability as a performer.

Her impact on the movie business is also reflected in these nominations; A Star Is Born is still hailed as one of the greatest musical dramas ever produced. Her rejection of the Oscar for Best Actress has only contributed to her mythology since many people think she was wrongfully disregarded.

Honorary Oscar: A consolation prize

Garland received an Honorary Juvenile Oscar in 1940 for her work in The Wizard of Oz and her services to entertainment, despite never having won a competitive Oscar. Although this honor recognizes her early career, her impact on the Oscar debate is defined by her performances in A Star Is Born and Judgement at Nuremberg.

Beyond the Oscars: A lssting influence

Garland’s influence on Hollywood extends well beyond nominations. She is regarded as one of the best performers of all time, inspiring countless other artists with her unmatched ability to blend acting, dancing, and song. She has become a timeless icon of tenacity in the face of hardship due to her fortitude in the face of personal setbacks.
