A portrait of Ethan Hawke

Here’s a retrospective look at his Oscar journey

This is how he was faring through the years with his Oscar campaign:

Training Day (2001)

The movie is rooted in the character Officer Jake Hoyt and you can almost say that the movie was named after him.

Film Synopsis: Training Day, Antoine Fuqua, is a crime thriller describing the action of one day in LAPD. Where the partner of the narcotics officer Jake Hoyt, acted by Ethan Hawke, is the criminal officer Alonzo Harris, acted by Denzel Washington. Concerns like morality or corruption and even the grey area of policing are depicted in the movie.

Boyhood (2014)

A man who is good-natured but rather negligent of his children. Performance: For the second time in the life of the actor, Hawke received the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the role of a sweet but ignorant father with the help of his subtle character. His character depicted the different layers of a man who as a father is trying to regain the authority he had in the lives of children as the children grow up.

Writing nominations

They include:

Before Sunset (2004)

The film is a sequel to the original story of Jesse Hawke and Celine Julie Delpy and starts nine years after the first movie. While walking around Paris, they talk about life, love and the decisions that have been taken in their lives.

Screenplay: Hawke co-wrote the scripts with Linklater and Delpy and this made the movie and the dialogues used richer and the real life-like. In the script, relationships were portrayed as they are and that, in a way, was plenty for the trio to be given an Oscar nomination for the category of Best Adapted Screenplay.

Before midnight

The characters are shown to have problems at home in later parts of the play because they are shown to be lovers with children. Screenplay: As in the previous film, Hawke, Linklater, and Delpy were also involved in the script writing; their script is as usual filled with love and the responsibility that comes with it in a rather funny way. The screenplay was complimented for its maturity and the degree of complication and they got their second Oscar nomination in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay.

Legacy and Influence

Ethan Hawkes’s ability is evident by the fact that he has been nominated twice for the Oscars, apart from being an actor and scriptwriter. He is known for the independent movies and his cooperation with Richard Linklater which contributed to the extension of the independent movies culture and visualized time, relations and people’s personalities.

Beyond his Oscar-nominated roles, Hawke has delivered memorable performances in films like. Aside from the movies that he was nominated for Oscars, Hawke has been featured in other great movies including:

Dead Poets Society (1989)

This was the movie that gave him the role of a young student, this was his breakthrough and he had a scene of him as a student inspired by his teacher played by Robin Williams.

First reformed (2017)

A very acclaimed performance of a man wrestling with his calling as a pastor and depression as well as environmental crisis.

Take away

Thus, any person, who is acting, writing or directing, becomes one of the most significant and rather permanent actors of Hollywood, and Hawke is not an exception. This is his Oscar journey that captures a career which is propelled by the desire to tell a story and to know human beings.
