Vincent Gardenia was a fairly talented actor who had a fairly long and productive career both in the cinema and in television shows and plays. He has been nominated for an Academy Award twice and both of these nominations demonstrate that he can deepen a character and be funny.

A portrait of Vincent Gardenia

A breakdown of his Oscar-nominated performances

The following is a list of his Oscar-nominated performances:

The made-for-TV movie Bang the Drum Slowly (1973)

In the movie “Bang the Drum Slowly” we meet Dutch Schnell who is the manager of a baseball team, Vincent Gardenia. The movie belongs to the sports category and is based on the story of two players in the team one of whom is diagnosed with terminal disease. Gardenia was also praised for depicting the manager with an austere personality but is, in fact, compassionate. The way that he was able to break the seriousness of a scene of romance and bring in comedy was how he got his first Oscar nomination. The role enables us to prove that Gardenia is a pan-American actress, who is ready to play a vigorous woman, but with some flaws.

Moonstruck (1987)

Gardenia’s second Oscar nomination was for Cosmo Castorini in ‘Moonstruck,’ a love comedy that is shot in Brooklyn. As the father of Cher’s character Loretta, Gardenia gives a splendid performance of a cheating husband who is afraid of his own shadow but is not averse to sexual adventure. In ‘Cosmo, he was funny, but at the same time, one could get the feeling that Cosmo had his problems too. It was one of the leading parts in the movie which was full of outstanding actors and this fact along with the ability of Gardenia to be both funny and serious in the movie was beneficial.

A character actor extraordinaire

He was an actor who could do a funny scene in a movie and do a tragic scene in the next movie as well with the same prowess. Though he had most of his success on the stage and in films, he may be best remembered for his role as the loud, jovial Frank Lorenzo in the television show *All in the Family*.

A stellar stage career

When he joined the world of films, he was already a theatre artist of some repute. The powerhouse performances in plays like *The Prisoner of Second Avenue* got him clapping and a Tony Award.

Breakthrough in Film

Gardenia began performing in films in the 1970s. His first memorable victory was in the much appreciated *Bang the Drum Slowly* (1973) where he portrays a baseball coach who is in a dilemma as to handle the situation when his player is on the deathbed. For this performance, he was nominated for the first time for the Academy Award as the Best Supporting Actor.

A versatile actor

This was the beauty of Gardenia’s career. This was a man who could go from comedy to drama with the snap of a finger. He used comedy in *Little Murders* (1971) for which he was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor.

A lasting legacy

Vincent Gardenia has also offered a lot of input in the acting field other than the movies that he has featured in. This is his stagecraft and comedy together with the capability to stage personalities on the stage. He is still highly regarded by people, particularly in the area of entertainment.

Conclusion

The most notable roles that Vincent Gardenia played were the roles that got him Oscar nominations for ‘Bang the Drum Slowly’ and ‘Moonstruck’. Proving that the actor had a lot of range. He was much loved in the industry because of the depth and humour that he was able to bring out in his characters. Thus, he doesn’t have to have an Oscar award, they must nominate him to say that he has contributed much to the development of cinema. People’s responses to Gardenia’s performances are still adjectives like warm, genuine and endearing.
