Djimon Gaston Hounsou French; born April 24, 1964) is a Beninese-born actor. He began by appearing in videos and graduated to films – he was in Without You I’m Not in One in 1990. Hounsou is popular as an actor popular for his intense acting prowess and muscular physique. Throughout his career, he has been nominated twice for the Academy Awards in the Supporting Actor bracket. In America (2003) 

Plot Overview: In America is an industry, semi-biographical film, illustrating the plight of the Irish immigrants on how they struggled to set their lives in New York. Mateo Kuamey is a Nigerian artist and lives in the same apartment as the family of the killers. He is an actor Djimon Hounsou. 

Character Analysis: Mateo is one of the most complex characters. At the initial instance, one may think that he is a criminal, a murderer when in reality he has a good heart. And he is quite sensitive. intercourse with the family especially the young girls is one way he finds comfort and in the process assists the family. Hounsou’s character as Mateo is very effective and was close to the hearts of viewers and reviewers all over the world. 

Diamond Blood (2006) 

Overview of the plot: Blood Diamond revolves around the Sierra Leone civil war and one can feel what has to be done for these diamonds. Solomon Vandy, a fisherman, is captured and brought to work in the diamond mines; the part is played by Djimon Hounsou. He is in a highly charged, macho film to retrieve the pink diamond and his family after receiving the said gem. Oscar Nomination: For this role, Hounsou received the nominations in the category of Best Supporting Actor. 

Character Analysis: Solomon is a father who does not consider how he will regain his family, he will try in any way to regain his family. Hounsou does a splendid job of portraying Solomon, to the audience through facial expressions. Also gestures, and words, can understand Solomon’s desperation, courage and hope. 

Impact on Hounsou’s career

These Oscars helped to put Djimon Hounsou into the category of a wanted and influential actor in Hollywood. His ability to incorporate much of the emotional truth in his characters has earned him acceptance and respect in the movie industry. 

Other work 

In 2010 Hounsou contributed to the making of the ESPON commercial clip of the 2010 FIFA World Cup slogan of 32 Teams 1 Dream. He gave his speech at the Commonwealth Summit on Climate Change on 22 September 2009 at the United Nations. Addressing the French media on 1 December 2009 he said that developed countries must come ‘with this question of what they want [or] they will be taken to cleaners on climate change’. 

 He has been actively working as an actor for many years and directed for the first time in 2018 the documentary called In Search of Voodoo. Compared Photos of West African Vodun or Voodoo West African Vodun, or Voodoo is a practice that is clearly described and has been for centuries in the African continent. In the novel Roots to Heaven the early history, the natural endowment and the culture in the form of religion of the people are depicted. It was scheduled to be premiered at Miami International Film Festival on March 10, 2018. 

 The same year, in 2024, Hounsou appeared in the video of South African record producer and DJ Black Coffee’s ‘Ode to Ancestors’. A song which was included in an EP inspired by Zack Snyder’s movie, Rebel Moon: Chapter 5: The Scargiver.
