Place of Birth and Education

Sergey Brin was born on August 21, 1973, in Moscow (RSFSR) into a Jewish family of mathematicians who emigrated from the USSR to the United States in 1979 when he was 6 years old. His father is a retired researcher at the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the nominee of physical and mathematical sciences Mikhail Izrailevich Brin (born 1948) – became a professor at the University of Maryland (now a professor), and his mother is Evgenia (nee Krasnokutskaya, born 1949) – an expert at NASA. Both mother and father of Sergei Brin are alumni of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University (1970 and 1971).

Sergey’s grandfather – Israel Abramovich Brin is a nominee of physical and mathematical sciences and was an assistant professor at the electromechanical faculty of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (1944-1998). Among other relatives, the grandfather’s brother is known – a Soviet athlete and trainer in Greco-Roman wrestling, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR Alexander Abramovich Kolmanovsky. My grandmother, Maya Brin, was a professor of Russian studies at the University of Maryland, her name now bears the foundation and is one of the programs of the Department of Russian Studies at the Faculty of Philology of the University.

He got an early-maturing bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Systems from the University of Maryland. He also earned a fellowship from the US National Science Foundation. The main branch of Sergey Brin’s scientific research was technologies for collecting data from unstructured sources, large arrays of scientific data, and texts.

In 1993 he enrolled at Stanford University in California, where he got his master’s degree and started working on his thesis. Already during his studies, he grew involved in Internet technologies and search engines, became the founder of several studies on the topic of obtaining information from large arrays of text and accurate data, and formulated a program for making scientific documents.

In 1995, at Stanford University, Sergey Brin faced another bachelor student in mathematics, Larry Page, with whom they established Google in 1998. Initially, they fiercely opposed when considering any scientific topics, but then they grew friends and teamed up to build a search engine for their campus. Together they formulated The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine, which is supposed to be the model of their future super-successful plan.

Brin and Page proved the power of their idea on the university search engine google.stanford.edu, developing its mechanism according to new principles. On September 14, 1997, the domain google.com was designated. Efforts were made to improve the idea and transform it into a business. Over time, the project left the walls of the university and succeeded to accumulate finances for further advancement.

The common business grew, was profitable, and even demonstrated resilience at the time of the dot-com crash, when hundreds of other companies went bankrupt. In 2004, Forbes magazine named the founders on the list of billionaires.

Social activity

Sergey Brin is the creator of dozens of publications in guiding American scholarly journals, and also occasionally lectures at different national and international scientific, business and technology conferences. He is a frequent contributor to the press and on television to share his views on search technology and the IT industry in general.

Brin’s company is making a gigantic charitable investment. The authors of the organization stated that over 20 years, $ 20 billion will be used for this purpose.

Unitedly with Larry Page, he is interested in the battle against aging.

Brin is working on other, more personal projects outside of Google. For example, he and Page are trying to help solve the world’s energy and climate problems at Google’s charity, Google.org, which invests in alternative energy to find broader renewable energy sources. The company admits that its founders want to “solve big problems with technology.”
